Text: Listening to Images by Tina Campt
Date: Mon, May 12th at 7pm
Location: Bedstuy with Amber and Flip
In Listening to Images, black feminist theorist Tina Campt takes a synesthetic approach to the archive: literally listening to photos of subordinated subjects as a way of recovering hidden histories.
We'll take this strategy to heart: adjusting the sensory mode of our attention (from looking to listening to feeling, and back again) as a way of uncovering the obscured lives of past and present. How can this tactic help us to subvert and reappropriate traditional modes of capture and representation?
Join us in Bedstuy to experiment with listening as a form of seeing. We'll read from Campt's text, then set out into the neighborhood with our eyes (and ears) tuned so that we might hear what has been hidden from view.
