Text: Regarding the Pain of Others by Susan Sontag + The Civil Contract of Photography by Ariel Azoulay
Date: Wed, May 14th at 7pm
Location: FiDi with Czarina & Nathan
In this Study, we'll look at photography as a means of relaying and bearing witness to suffering. Author and theorist Ariel Azoulay writes that photography creates
"a particular set of relations between individuals and the powers that govern them and, at the same time, a form of relations among equals that constrains that power.”
What does it mean to witness? Who does a witness become in relation to the powers that govern them? Who does a witness become in relation to the suffering subject? How does photography in our current media environment create (or annihilate) the conditions for attending to the pain of others?
