The future of writing is uncertain. The attentional harms of human fracking and the extraordinary power of Large Language Models have powerfully called into question the values and the uses of the written word. In this course, we'll test the idea that writing's future rests in its function as a technology of attention: a way of directing our minds and our senses to texts, to ourselves, and to the world around us.
In this virtual seminar, we'll play with writing as a practice of attention (and a form of resistance to human fracking). Through readings by Raymond Queneau, Rachel Hadas, Italo Calvino, and others, we'll experiment with different modes of writing – and the special forms of attention that these make possible. The seminar will combine reading, writing, and workshop sessions, and everyone — writers, teachers of writing, aspiring writers—is welcome!
