On the other selves that masks reveal
Masks are among the oldest tools of theatre: objects that transform how we see, move, and relate to one another. In this seminar, we’ll explore the mask not as something that hides the performer, but as a portal into greater attention, imagination, and play.
Working with handmade leather and papier-mâché masks from Italy and Bali, participants will explore the physical language of the mask through movement, character, spatial awareness, and interaction. Drawing from styles of Commedia dell’Arte and clown, we’ll use structured play to attend to how character emerges spontaneously. How does a mask change the way we inhabit our bodies? What happens when we allow an object, an impulse, or another person to lead us somewhere unexpected?
Like childhood dress-up, mask play offers a rare permission to become someone else. In becoming someone else, paradoxically, we may discover something more truthful about ourselves.
