The rapid rise of shockingly powerful AI systems over the last several years seems to represent one of the very largest historical/cultural/technological watersheds of the last century. This course will go straight at this momentous issue — via the issue of ATTENTION.
“Attention Is All You Need” borrows its title from one of the most-cited scientific papers in human history, the 2017 paper that established the algorithmic heart of modern “Large Language Models” (LLMs like Claude and ChatGPT). What kind of “attention” drives modern artificial intelligence? And what kind of attention do we need if we are going to survive (and thrive!) in the world of AI?
No math or technical ability is required for this class, and we welcome both AI skeptics and AI enthusiasts. Our aim will be to create a thoughtful and informed space in which to think seriously about the perils and promise of this extraordinary technology — and to do so in the spirit of Attention Activism.
Co-led by computer scientist Bernadette “Bernie” Boscoe and SoRA co-founder D. Graham Burnett, a Princeton science historian.
