Author Ted Chiang defines art as “something that results from making a lot of choices.” With the advent of AI-generated art, many of these choices are abstracted away into a dozen-word prompt. In the past, newer art forms, particularly photography, that made visual capture “easier” were disparaged; now, however, the medium is on par with more “traditional” art forms, and its practitioners, like Ansel Adams and Carrie Mae Weems, are highly regarded within the art world.
Is AI art really art? If so, is AI a medium? What kind? How does the ease of AI “art” impact our belief in its validity? We’ll ponder these questions and more with the help of writer Ted Chiang.
