Text: "Tools for Conviviality" by Ivan Illich
Date: Sat, June 21st at 2pm
Location: Greenpoint with Czarina & Nick
Theologian and critic Ivan Illich argued passionately for a return to technologies that put agency in the hands of ordinary people, rather than a technocratic elite. His proposed term of "conviviality" in opposition to "industrial productivity" painted a vision of a technological paradigm that valued simplicity, direct use, and an intimate understanding of everyday tools.
How do Illich's ideas apply to our present moment, where the technologies that most shape our lives are far too complex for popular understanding? Is "digital conviviality" possible? How do we build it together?
