Text: Making Kin With the Machine by Lewis, Arista, Pechawis, and Kite

This paper draws on Hawaiian, Lakota and Cree cosmologies to propose a vision of humans' computation creations as "kin" — fellow beings in a "circle of relationship." As digital technologies approach (or seem to approach) life-like "intelligence," we must reconsider how we choose to relate to them.
Can we establish a loving relationship with AI? Why does it matter? How do indigenous notions of computers-as-kin resemble or diverge from accelerationist visions of computers as the future of intelligent life?
Join us for a study on flourishing with technology — for as the co-authors remind us, "We flourish only when all of our kin flourish."
