It can be hard to imagine a future beyond ourselves when so much threatens the stability of the present. Wendell Berry reminds us, though, that the choices we make today are the conditions of tomorrow. What should we do when it all seems to be falling apart? Plant sequoias. Sow the crops we will not live to harvest. Invest in the future we will not get to see.
Roots provide for generations of growth no matter what is heading our way. Branches will break. Storms will ravage the lands. When we spread roots deeply and broadly, we cast our lot with hope.
