What makes certain places feel welcoming, alive, or deeply memorable? How does the design of a place shape the way we gather, move, rest, and relate?

In A Pattern Language, architect Christopher Alexander argues that the places we love are rarely accidental. They are shaped by recurring “patterns”— timeless design principles that support human flourishing, from the paths we follow and the rooms we gather in to the edges where gardens meet buildings and the places we naturally pause. Rather than prescribing a single way to build, Alexander offers a language for observing why some places invite connection while others leave us feeling disconnected.

In this Study, we’ll explore the relationship between attention and the built environment. Together we’ll wander the grounds of Laguna Gloria, reading the landscape through Alexander’s patterns and asking how architecture, gardens, pathways, thresholds, and gathering spaces influence the way we experience one another and the more-than-human world. Along the way, we’ll consider what it might mean to design places that cultivate belonging, beauty, and aliveness.
