Ghosts have always unsettled the boundary between the living and the dead, the material and the unseen. In “The Future of Ghosts,” Jeanette Winterson asks what happens when digital worlds make those boundaries less certain. If we can meet as avatars, inhabit spaces without our bodies, and continue interacting with versions of people after they die, what makes a ghost a ghost?
This Study will consider how technology might change our sense of presence, absence, and being alive. We’ll bring Winterson’s questions into the Texas State Cemetery, a place where death is marked in stone and remembered through the physical world, then gather at Radio Rosewood over coffee for conversation.
