In his Manifesto of Surrealism, Andre Breton formulates a creative process led by the unconscious mind:
“SURREALISM, n. Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express — verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner — the actual functioning of thought.”
Breton’s experimentations in surrealism endeavored to conjure up the mind of the artist as an object of interpretation, creating a window into one’s own pure, unadulterated imagination.
We will gather at Dolores Park to reflect on Breton’s ideas and reevaluate surrealism as a practice of attention.
