Human fracking is a threat to democracy. By fracturing and monetizing our collective attention, this extractive industry compromises the practices of public reasoning and deliberative processes that make democratic politics possible. To rebuild our political institutions, we must repair our capacity for collective attention. This will require a clear understanding of the role of attention in civic life.
In this virtual seminar course, we will consider the direct relationship between Attention Activism and democracy. We'll draw on the work of John Dewey, Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas, Danielle Allen, and others. What forms of attention make healthy politics possible? What role does Attention Activism play in the effort to salvage democracy? And how can everyday people join the effort?
Led by Mihir Kshirsagar, Princeton technology policy clinic director and former lead trial counsel for the New York Attorney General.
