Guest curators: Catherine L. Hansen, boshi’s place

At this summer exhibition, the Strother School of Radical Attention presents two short films by Claudia Claremi and The Friends of Attention that re-encounter the camera and screen as technologies altering our relationship to space and time. Anthesis (2023) and The Mirror Image: Attention and Infinite Reflection (2022) each document outdoor gatherings where The Friends of Attention activated protocols engaging with the technological conditions of filming and film-making. These original protocols are also on view at the exhibition. In turn, the resulting short films address us at the other end of the lens, questioning: what happens when the camera looks, when we begin to look back from the other side of the screen? Are we that speculative audience and future projected through the lens at the moment of filming, their counterpoint, or something else entirely? 

Looking, and being looked at, through the lens is no longer a choice but a fundamental condition in the current landscape of the Attention Economy. When The Camera Looks reinvigorates the agency of human attention in facing the lens by considering its structural conditions: its inherent multiplicity, journey through space and time, and the real and imagined audiences beyond the screen.
