Sidewalk Study East Village

Text: Our Aesthetic Categories by Sianne Ngai

Guides: Kyle & Czarina

Place: East Village

Ngai's Our Aesthetic Categories theorizes the aesthetic categories that characterize post-modern culture: the zany, the cute, and the interesting. In her analysis, these are the central concepts used to process "the hypercommodified, mass-mediated, performance-driven world of late capitalism."

We'll gather to think about how (or whether) these aesthetic categories help us to make sense of the pervasive spectacle of late capitalism — and to imagine new lenses through which to view our present moment.
