Entering America's birthday month, we call into question narratives of what makes someone’s "personal hero." The figures who get memorialized — in headlines, in statues, in the stories we inherit as history — are never the whole picture. They are a selection, and every selection is also an erasure. Who shapes our lives in ways that don't make it into the archive? Perhaps our heroes are those who challenge the myths sold to us as truth, who carve out space and place for what has been deliberately obscured.
