Most people are in the habit of thinking of ourselves as a distinct and atomized self existing as a single point in history. However, animist perspectives encourage a different understanding. Are our “selves” merely a function of personal experiences, familial histories and immediate ancestral lines, or is there something far more expansive, perhaps eternal, living through us? What becomes possible when we stretch beyond the “funnel vision” of the “modern Western individual,” rooting instead into the infinite ecology of life, death, and the living continuum between the two?
