Sidewalk Study CLEVELAND, OH: A GREEN DOOR

  • Lakefront Nature Preserve Overlook Cleveland, Ohio, 44103 United States (map)

Portals are everywhere in the stories we tell children: a wardrobe, a rabbit hole, a green door in a white wall. But what does it actually mean to cross one? Not fantasy, not escape. In "The Door in the Wall," H.G. Wells follows a man who finds, at five years old, a door that opens onto a garden more real than his own life ever was — and who spends the rest of his years torn between the door and the world of appointments, ambitions, and duties on this side of it. Underneath the wonder, Wells finds something more unsettling — a happiness so complete that once glimpsed, ordinary life can never quite compete with it again. Join us as we sit with what it costs to remember a door you can't find your way back to. What have you glimpsed that you've spent your life trying to return to?
