Text: Caste and Ecology in the Social Insects by G.F. Oster, E.O. Wilson & Ants in Space by Stefanie M. Countryman
Guides: Nicholas & Amalia
Place: Prospect Park
What can insects teach us about human society? In their study of the divisions of labor among social insects," biologists Oster and Wilson propose that the resulting formations resemble a kind of caste structure. Biologist Stefanie Countryman's study of ants in outer space — a true terra nullius for that species — asks what kinds of organization arise among ants in a totally unknown environment.
How do insects "design" their systems of self-organization? What can they teach humans? We'll gather in Prospect Park to explore how non-human species can expand and enrich our own sense of design.
