A welcome entry for all people – performers, artists, educators, and everyone – to apply jazz pedagogies to their personal instrument of attention.

Oscillating between ideas and practice, we will lean into jazz as a verb, exploring what it means to take a jazz approach to any endeavor.

We will think about and play with jazz’s application to attentional practices, such as collective improvisation and experimenting with risk in the unknown.  Techniques include influence mapping, advanced listening, using mistakes, role swapping, repurposing, generativities/performativities, building the “we,” and many others.

For experts and first time beginners alike. Bring whatever you want to jazz into group improvisation (art, movement, writing, sound).  Work will be done individually (“shedding”), in pairs (“dueting”), and as a group (“jamming”).

Taught by David Landes, freelance drummer with the Synchronicity Arts improv collective, and Duke University professor in Writing/Rhetoric and Theater Studies.  His forthcoming book, Attention Literacy, explicates contemporary forms of attention we experience but don’t have words for.

SoRA All-Nighters are late-night, one-time immersive study sessions in our Dumbo Sanctuary space.
